(adjective) Happening at a particularly inappropriate time in a way that causes great problems or sadness.

EXAMPLE: The untimely death of the talented young man in a car accident dashed his father's plans to give his only child control of the family's business.

(INFORMAL) To make an investigation, often by asking questions or looking for something.

EXAMPLE: I'm not happy where I work now, so I want to poke around and see if there are any jobs available at other companies.
